What is Liga Europa?
Liga Europa, also known as UEFA Europa League, is an annual club football competition organized by UEFA, the governing body of European football. It is the second-tier competition in Europe, after UEFA Champions League, and involves teams from across the continent.
Liga Europa was founded in 1971 as UEFA Cup, and was renamed as UEFA Europa League in 2009. The competition has undergone several changes in its format and structure over the years, but its main objective remains to provide an opportunity for clubs that do not qualify for UEFA Champions League to compete in Europe.

The winner of Liga Europa qualifies for UEFA Champions League, as well as UEFA Super Cup, which is a one-off match against the winner of UEFA Champions League. The winner also receives a trophy and a cash prize, which varies depending on their performance throughout the tournament.
How does Liga Europa work?
Liga Europa consists of four stages: qualification, group stage, knockout phase, and final.
The qualification stage takes place from July to August, and involves teams from various national leagues and associations that have not qualified for UEFA Champions League. The teams are divided into different rounds and paths based on their ranking and coefficient, and play two-legged ties to determine who advances to the group stage.
The group stage takes place from September to December, and involves 48 teams: 17 teams that have qualified directly from their domestic leagues or cups, 10 teams that have been eliminated from UEFA Champions League qualification or play-offs, and 21 teams that have qualified from the qualification stage. The teams are drawn into 12 groups of four, and play each other twice in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group progress to the knockout phase.
The knockout phase takes place from February to May, and involves 32 teams: 24 teams that have qualified from the group stage, and eight teams that have finished third in their UEFA Champions League groups. The teams are paired up randomly, with some restrictions based on their seeding and country, and play two -legged ties to determine who advances to the next round. The knockout phase consists of the round of 32, the round of 16, the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals. The away goals rule is applied in case of a draw on aggregate, except for the semi-finals, where extra time and penalty shoot-out are used if needed.
The final takes place in May, and involves the two teams that have reached the end of the knockout phase. The final is a single match, played at a neutral venue that is decided by UEFA in advance. The winner is crowned as the champion of Liga Europa, and qualifies for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. If the final ends in a draw after 90 minutes, extra time and penalty shoot-out are used to decide the winner.

According to UEFA, the total prize money for Liga Europa 2022/2023 was 560 million, which was distributed among the teams based on their performance and market pool share. The market pool share is calculated according to the value of each national TV market and the number of teams from each association.

This can be a huge incentive and motivation for the teams to perform well in Liga Europa, as it can open up new opportunities and possibilities for them.
Liga Europa also has a rich history and tradition, as it is the successor of UEFA Cup, which was one of the oldest and most prestigious club competitions in Europe. Some of the most famous and successful clubs in Europe have won Liga Europa or UEFA Cup, such as Liverpool FC, Juventus FC, FC Porto, FC Internazionale Milano, AFC Ajax, and FC Bayern München.
